Depressive Disorders
Depression can be caused by biological factors including genetics and/or external events. Life stressors alter neurochemicals in the brain such as serotonin and norepinephrine which play a distinct and important role in mood.
Regardless, symptoms of depression include sadness, irritability, hopelessness, worthlessness, fatigue, low energy, increased or decreased appetite, too much or too little sleep, inability to enjoy day-to-day things, and thoughts of suicide can be experienced.
Depression can occur one time or it can be recurrent. In fact, it is often common to have multiple depressive episodes throughout one’s lifetime. Chronic depression that is persistent and waxes and wanes in severity of symptoms is called dysthymia or persistent depressive disorder.
